Loyalty...honesty...hard work-just a few of the values that stem from a rural background. That describes who we are at Rural Mutual. For more than 75 years, we've given our undivided attention to insuring what's valuable to Wisconsin residents.

Rural Mutual has more than 150 agents in more than 100 locations across the state. The company has been headquartered in Madison since it started operations in 1934.

Endorsements and awards

In 2009, Rural Mutual was awarded the Ward's 50 seal as one of the top 50 property-casualty companies in the United States. We are also an "A Excellent" rated company by A.M. Best. And we're the endorsed carrier of the Wisconsin Towns Association.

Our beginnings

Our company was formed in 1934 by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation to provide low cost auto insurance to Farm Bureau members. Our current name came from a 1957 merger of Rural Mutual Casualty Insurance Company and the Rural Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Wisconsin.

• 1934 - Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company of Wisconsin was incorporated on February 29.
• 1935 - Company started operations.
• 1945 - The Farm Protector policy released to offer extensive farm insurance coverage.
• 1947 - The Rural Mutual name was adopted when the Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Casualty Company changed its name to Rural Mutual Casualty Insurance Company.
• 1947 - The Rural Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Wisconsin formed to insure fire, windstorm and crop hail coverage for Wisconsin farmers.
• 1949 - The Rural Security Life Insurance Company began operation.
• 1957 - The Rural Mutual Insurance Company formed with the merger of Rural Mutual Casualty Insurance Company Rural Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Wisconsin.
• 1965 - Partnered with the WIAA to sponsor the WIAA/Rural Mutual Sportsmanship Award.
• 1993 - Rural Security Life Company acquired by Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company of Iowa.
• 2003 - Became the endorsed carrier of the Wisconsin Towns Association.
